Clifford confirmed the 11 slot plug went into the production 802s. Time to check the '9' series, maybe.

11 slots in my model 14 902's.
Not all vegetables make good leaders.
11 slits in my 802G's. 13 slits in my 291C's
I also think the tangerine was more of a cost cutting design than an actual improvement. I prefer my 802D's to the 802G's any day. I don't notice any loss is n HF extension with the 802D's
When I was looking for a pair of 604's I made sure to get the metal phase plug version.
I found an error in the math.....just kidding.
So the model predicts better performance. And measurements verify it.
Yet some folks don't hear or believe it?
I've listened to many examples of both and always prefer the tangerine phase plug versions.
Being less expensive to manufacture is a bonus. Of course sometimes they fall out...
Enjoying Altec Speakers since 1972
The performance is "different", no argument. So the model predicts better performance. And measurements verify it.
"Better" IMO, is a subjective observation at best, and i assume you're referring to the HF extension demonstrated in Cliff's paper.
The extension is a bit jagged, not nearly as smooth as the rest of it's range, and comes at the expense of a 2 db suck out in the more critical 6khz to 7khz range.
IMO, each design is better suited to certain applications, and you can see that Altec shifted the crossover points of the tangerine equipped systems much higher. Whether it has anything to do with the phase plug or not, you can definitely push the tangerine equipped systems harder before nasty sounds come out. I would tend to attribute it as much to the higher XO's.

Since my hearing drops off after 10K I'd go with the old style phase plugs with the better mid range.
And yes, those tangerines cost penny's to manufacture compared to the complex phase plug of years past. It's a pressed together assembly made of 3 pieces. Machined afterwards and plated. Very expensive to make. The center 2 pieces are precision zinc die castings.
